energy psychology therapy

Over the last 30 years, many in our combined human healing fields of psychology, social work, psychiatry, theology, marital & family therapy, nursing, bodywork, nutrition, and traditional western & traditional chinese medicines, became aware of, and uncomfortable with the Mind / Body split prevalent in our western human healing approaches.

Dr. John Diamond, MD, an Australian psychiatrist in the early 1980's published a book, "The Body Doesn't Lie", in which he postulated a connection ( long held in traditional Chinese medicine) that specific organs in the human body represented specific emotional states, and that by specific "self statements", and tapping on the appropriate energy meridian associated with that particular body organ, the "emotional, and physical well being" of the individual could be amplified. He adopted the traditional Chinese name for this subtle energy as "chi", measurable by a process of "muscle testing". His later popular book, "Life Energy: Unlocking the Hidden Power of Your Emotions to Achieve Total Well-Being", and 20 others, summarized his professional work and methods over 25 a year period.

In the mid 1990's, among others, an American Psychologist, Dr. Roger Callahan, Ph.D., developed and published articles describing "Thought Field Therapy" ( TFT), a method he had evolved for conducting successful psychotherapy. This TFT method employed a combination of self statements concerning the Presenting problem, and specific tapping regimes of key energy meridian in the body, "like acupuncture but without needles".
Further theorists followed Dr. Callahan, including a Canadian, Dr. Lee Pullos, Ph.D., University of British Columbia, and among many others, Gary Craig, another American who developed "Emotional Freedom Techniques", or EFT for short.

Concurrently to these events, Dr. Francine Shapiero, Ph.D., another American colleague, published findings whereby she evolved a method of therapy employing stimulation of both left and right brain in the healing process, by eye movement, known as " Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing" or EMDR for short. This method powerfully harnessed both brain's strengths, previously known to having different, and complimentary roles in our intellectual, emotional and physical functioning and well-being.

Much enthusiasm, and skepticism greeted Dr. Diamond, Dr Callihan's, and Dr. Shapiro's work, as some of the results being reported as achieved were too outstanding to be possible within traditional psychologically based "scientific" theory approaches.
(And I, too, was just as skeptical as others in my Field, until a colleague challenged my ignorance in 1999, demonstrating the process on me with one of my long-standing personal life issues, and I experienced the shift described in the literature by these "pioneer's". I was then strongly motivated to join other's in supporting this new field of healing to establish it's now scientific research base, broadening it's application, and making it legitimate in modern Healing approaches. And becoming a competence practitioner myself!)

This field has grown rapidly, now known today as Energy Psychology, in part due to the the arrival of Managed Care models in our society, these seeking lower cost, shorter psychotherapy modalities, and due to the demonstrated success of these treatment modalities by properly trained practitioners. Scientific research methodologies have now expanded in the Field confirming the value of these approaches in psychotherapy.
Having begun training, under qualified Supervision in 1999, I am now competent to practice energy psychology, judging when this treatment approach is appropriate, or how this might be best combined with more traditional psychotherapy methods.
